The Society of Ancient Philosophy

The Society of Ancient Philosophy

The Society of Ancient Philosophy (古代哲学会) is an academic organization based in Kyoto University, working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, and to help members acquaint themselves with each other.

Our organization was originally founded as “the Colloquium of Ancient Philosophy” (古代哲学談話会) when Professor Michitaro Tanaka was working at Kyoto University (1947-1965). In 1968 we published the first volume of Methodos, a journal for ancient philosophy, under the leadership of Professor Norio Fujisawa. Since then we have been publishing a new volume of this journal and holding the Colloquium of the Society of Ancient Philosophy (古代哲学会談話会) once each year. In 1979 we renamed our organization as “the Society of Ancient Philosophy” (古代哲学会). We published the 50th anniversary volume of Methodos in 2018.
